Ode to Stephen Biko

Watching species disappear in the bush in Africa, and experiencing apartheid at the same time, I wrote this poem.

Align with the leopard
Love the tiger
in your womb
let the aardvark
loose
and pray
for the mantis
that houses
herself
in your heart.

Remember the antelope
and the wild mustang
wildebeest
with her head
drawn down
to her knees.

All the earth’s
creatures
alert us to the place
inside ourselves
that houses
our spirit core.

Short term
memory losses
become unconscious
patterns
we don’t notice
until whole species
are lost
and in grief
we finally
sit down
to remember
who we are now
and who were were
in the beginning.
